I started off with an $8 radioshack kit a few years ago. It wore out rather quickly, so I got a $20 adjustable heat one with a very fine tip online, and it's served me for two years now for fitting my Z with around 80 component LEDs and resistors, fixing 10+ ipods, ten times as many headphones... Technique and practice are way more important than the soldering iron. I've found the larger, more expensive soldering guns to be unwieldy and imprecise. Get something cheap, adjustable heat, < 100 watts. Practice on larger, cheap things before you try soldering something you care about. It's really fun learning and is incredibly useful. Good luck!
